Securing Large Events (Part 1)

Posted by on

Securing large events is always complicated. Large events typically suggest large venues. Large venues often have numerous entrance and exits. Securing large events in scenarios like this can be a daunting task, even when the responsible parties have access to significant resources. Any sufficient plan for securing large events will be complex and must be carefully coordinated and managed. Security solutions for large events normally include technology and personnel so significant training is required to ensure the staff can properly operate the equipment and follow protocol.

Securing large events is not a single phase endeavor. Initial screening as people enter the venue is imperative, but providing security once the people are inside is critical. Maintaining control of large events is challenging since criminals have many options for getting contraband into the venue after they clear the initial screening process. Clever criminals can have things previously planted in the event venue, receive contraband from people outside the security perimeter, or make other arrangements to get around the security checkpoints.

Watching large crowds is difficult for the trained surveillance operator and overwhelming for a standard security guard. In order to properly secure large events, specific training must be completed by the security officers who will be responsible for monitoring individual’s movements, actions, and reactions. Although the training will cost additional money, it is impossible to secure large events without the proper preparation. In addition to training, running drills and mock events plays a huge role in preventing and responding to problematic situations when securing large events.

We look forward to seeing you here at The O next Wednesday for additional insight into this topic.
