Crimes of opportunity are those resulting from spontaneous, unlawful action due to a situation that presents itself without prior planning. Premeditated crimes are different in that the criminal plans the scenario and does everything possible to create the situation leading to the criminal action. An example is a teenage stock boy who is leaving for the day at the store and notices someone left the cash register open and unattended. He is staring at a couple hundred dollar bills. He might consider taking a bill or two since that might seem harmless to a large store who may not notice. This would be a crime of opportunity if the boy chose to take the money. Examples like this are endless.
Securing security equipment is a concept that is seldom discussed, yet has significant impact on the quality of a security design. Most people discuss the importance of securing entry/exit points, critical assets, and other areas of interest, but seldom provide details of how the actual security equipment will be protected from those not authorized to access it.
