Most aspects of life experience change. Standards and policies are no different. The regulations regarding surveillance in gaming institutions, namely casinos, will change significantly if the proposed modifications to the Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) are approved. These modifications have been considered for nearly 2 years and apparently are now ready to pass. The most significant of the regulations is regarding redundancy for the gaming industry as a whole. The proposed language specifies true redundancy. In fact, the language stipulates the video recording system must be designed such that no video recording is lost due to the failure of any single component. The redundancy language that is actually proposed is below (copied from standards). “(v) Have a media storage system that is configured so that a failure of any single component will result in no loss of data from the media storage system.”
Surveillance cameras have many uses and are effective for enhancing the security posture of the facilities where they are installed. Surveillance cameras of all kinds have traditionally proven to be terrific deterrents against people intent on committing crime and can provide irrevocable evidence of past events when combined with a high quality digital or network video recorder (DVR or NVR). In addition to the many advantages provided by surveillance cameras, they can function as motion detectors. This is a function of the DVR in analog systems and of the camera in IP systems. Not all DVRs and IP cameras include this capability, but it is part of most high quality systems.
