Point of Sale Systems Integration

Point of Sale (POS) systems are now common in the commercial marketplace for tracking transactions as consumers purchase goods and services, especially in retail-oriented businesses. Over the last few years as integration technology has advanced and provided expanded capabilities, Point of Sale systems began integrating with the video surveillance systems in order to provide actual video footage of each transaction rather than merely having data history of each event. This integration has proven to be an extremely effective tool in uncovering criminal activity by those operating cash registers and similar devices. In addition to video integration and having a solid event history of transactions, new and advanced Point of Sale systems and interfaces now provide robust business analytic tools for easy creation of reports, graphs, and statistical information to improve management efficiency.

Advanced Point of Sale systems, like those offered by Orion Security Solutions, provide tremendous amounts of information with the click of a button. The user can then elect how they prefer to receive the data. For example, if raw data in report form is preferred, then the user is free to either select one of the preconfigured reports or customize their own form. The Point of Sale data can also be displayed with graphs, tables, or other visual presentations to facilitate an easy data interface for management and others to gain business intelligence. Quick searches can be accomplished by querying defined triggers in order to make searching for information easy. For example, a simple mouse click can provide full histories of how many of a particular item has been purchased in a specified timeframe, how many refunds were processed by specific individuals, and virtually any other combination of parameters.

Many Point of Sale systems that have attempted to integrate with video surveillance systems in the past created more problems than benefits. Many of the less sophisticated systems simply overlaid transaction data on top of the related video imagery rather than integrating them as separate streams of information. The problem with overlaying the data on the video was that it quickly diminished the video footage quality as the data ran over important areas in the video evidence. In some cases, the video degradation is significant enough to render the video nearly worthless since intelligible video detail was eroded by the data overlay. Efficient Point of Sale tools are able to display the transaction data in its own area of the screen while displaying the corresponding video footage adjacent to it in a separate window. The Point of Sale and video surveillance systems are also able to synchronize their time so that all related data is accurate.

Point of Sale systems have progressed to be very effective additions to comprehensive security solutions. Unlike many other security systems, Point of Sale systems provide a tremendous and evident return on investment with the data searching and business analytic capabilities they provide. Managers and business owners can quickly determine what items sell best, where productivity is lacking, which employees are most productive, and many other useful pieces of information.

We look forward to sharing more interesting security insights with you next Wednesday here at The O.
