Synchronizing Video and Audio

Many surveillance operations are enhanced when the ability to record audio is coupled with video. Having an audio and video record of an event paints a more complete picture of what happened and provides more comprehensive evidence of past activities. This concept is not new and has long been understood. However, the challenge has been synchronizing the audio and video correctly so that the words are coming out of the people’s mouths as their lips are moving on the recorded video.

New digital recording technology, such as that offered by Orion Security Solutions, synchronizes the video and audio inputs to overcome the age old issue of latency. Latency can be exemplified by old Asian movies that have been translated where the mouths move, but the words heard don’t match the lip movement. This effect confuses the historic record of the event and lessens the record’s credibility. In fact, recorded evidence is often scrutinized when the words don’t match the lip movements since so many options exist for overlaying audio files on recorded video, but few exist that legitimately synchronize the two inputs.

The secret to providing synchronized audio and video lies in the way the two information streams are compressed and decoded. Efforts to process the audio and video independently and then overlay them are usually unsuccessful. When the audio and video are compressed together as a simultaneous stream, the streams can be decoded together as a consolidated feed and produce synchronized video and audio. Eliminating the latency between the audio and video feeds produces valid historic evidence of an event.

The uses for recorded video and audio files are numerous. Many uses are standard and others are customized for specific applications. Regardless of the use and application, synchronizing the audio and video streams is always crucial to ensure the integrity of the recorded evidence.
