Value of High Definition Monitors

Monitors are the windows into surveillance systems. There are many things going on behind the scenes in these systems and the monitors display the results to the operator. There are many types of monitors that have different qualities and cost. Plasma, liquid crystal display (LCD), and light emitting diode (LED) monitors are widely available so consumers have to assess which type is best for their application. When low quality monitors are used on high quality surveillance systems, the result is less than desirable. Unfortunately, many people spend significant amounts of money on high resolution backend equipment, such as digital video recorders, but choose economical monitor options that yield poor quality images for the operators. The cost of good monitors is a small portion of the expense of a high quality video surveillance system. I strongly recommend the investment for best system performance.

Plasma monitors are not recommended for high quality video surveillance systems for many reasons. LCD and LED monitor technologies provide better results so I will focus on the main differences between these two monitor types. For both monitor options, we are assuming that they have high definition inputs such as digital video interface (DVI) or high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) connections.

LCD monitors provide a more cost effective option for high definition display. These monitors have a tendency to “burn in” over time if the images on the monitor remain unchanged, but have less “burn in” tendency than previous monitor technologies. One of the biggest drawbacks to LCD monitors is the fact that mercury is used in their production making them less environmentally friendly.

LED monitors cost more than LCD monitors, but offer several advantages. LED monitors consume less power and do not use mercury in their manufacturing process making them significantly more environmentally friendly. LED monitors produce more vibrant and colorful images than LCD monitors. The black colors in LED monitors are truly black rather than dark grey creating much more realistic colors. LED monitors also can achieve higher contrast ratios and refresh rates than LCD monitors resulting in extraordinary imagery. The good news is that the price gap between LED and LCD monitors is gradually closing.

The professionals here at Orion Security Solutions strongly recommend purchasing high quality and resolution monitors to create a nice window into the surveillance system. The monitor is a critical component of a high quality surveillance system and the quality of these devices determines how the overall system looks and functions.
